Sustainable Spring Pantry Clean-Out: The Essential Questions You Should Be Asking

No matter where you live right now, you’re probably longing for spring as much as we are. I mean, c’mon. Who isn’t excited for the warmer weather, bright pastel colors, and spring holidays? We hope that these next few months are full of love and light, and just as the flowers around us will be blooming, so will our own individual manifestations. And with that, we’re going to challenge a popular saying that’s so often associated with spring cleaning: “Out with the old, in with the new.” Why? Because we can, and you can too.

Lilian Alves Owner/Co-founder at Beantween Coffee

As a sustainable, fair-trade, organic coffee company, we’re pretty used to breaking barriers and challenging the norm–it’s one of the things we do best (besides helping you brew delicious coffee of course). When a company is putting in the time, money, and energy to ensure such important principles are upheld, it’s very telling of their values and care for both their customers and preserving the world around them. But remember– who you decide to buy from is just as important because that’s your impact! It’s truly a team effort on both ends. So, let’s challenge the saying, “Out with the old, in with the new” by taking it up a notch and thinking of the bigger picture. How can you become more sustainable in your pantry and support brands that stand behind recycling, repurposing, and/or giving back to the community?

Awareness.

Educate yourself on how the food industry is affecting the global world and research the companies you typically purchase from. What do you like and what do you dislike about their processes (packaging, working conditions for their workers, etc.)? How are they reaching past their profitable goals and providing assistance to others? Beantween’s purpose has always been rooted in bringing our customers a low-acidic, healthy coffee option amongst the many coffee brands that are, unfortunately, packed with chemicals and pesticides, but there’s more to it. Much more! Once we saw the influence we could have and the help we could give, it was like a new world was unlocked. And we not only wanted to chase this rainbow, but we wanted to help you chase it as well. That’s why with every purchase, we allow our customers to choose from a list of non-profit, charitable organizations and decide which one they would like us to donate a portion of their purchase. It’s that simple, and it’s that effective. Because even if everybody did just a little bit to contribute, the magnitude of assistance would be incredible.

Practice.

It can begin with you and some simple pantry swaps. You now know of at least one company that practices sustainability, fair-trade, and charitable work– Beantween Coffee. Make that first step by replacing your current, mainstream coffee brand with any of our specialty roasts (Blonde, Medium, Dark, Espresso, and/or Decaf). It’s going to feel SO amazing, and I don’t mean just for your tummy! And don’t stop there, keep going. We know we are! Just recently, Beantween has decided to repurpose our used coffee bags by giving them to local Manhattan Beach elementary schools for crafting. Again, it’s truly the little things that add up and have the ability to make a wonderful impact on so many lives.

Spread the word.

Extra, extra! Read all about it! Unfortunately, we don’t hear enough about sustainability and ways to enhance these practices in today’s world. But it doesn’t have to be like that if we don’t want it to. We have the power and tools to share almost anything we’d like to our own unique, curated audiences via social media. As a small business, we’re always hoping to reach as many people as possible and trying to find new and innovative ways to connect with the community, but we often get new customers based on the high recommendations of others (which we are so fortunate for!). This has shown us how crucial “word of mouth” can really be and the impact of sharing with others. Just as we may make new friends by association, we can also choose who to support by association. Talk to people about your findings, engage in discussion, and ask questions.

We can’t wait to see what you do with your power and voice as a consumer, and never forget that the world is a better place because you’re in it! Let us know on our Instagram page @beantweencoffee what other sustainable companies you’re loving and let’s get this important dialogue started :-)
